Parklands
Post-war residential estate on the eastern side of the city with consistent mid-century housing, a community primary school, and proximity to St Richard's Hospital.
Parklands is a residential area on the eastern side of Chichester, developed primarily in the post-war decades to accommodate the city's growing population. The area lies between the Oving Road to the north and St Richard's Hospital to the south, with the city centre to the west and open countryside to the east. The housing is predominantly 1950s and 1960s in character: semi-detached and terraced houses with gardens, built in the style typical of post-war local authority and private development. Some later infill and extension has added variety, but the area retains a consistent mid-century suburban character. Parklands Community Primary School serves the area's families and is a focal point for the local community. The school and surrounding green spaces provide some relief from the residential density. St Richard's Hospital, the main acute hospital for the Chichester area, sits on the southern edge of Parklands along Spitalfield Lane. The hospital provides accident and emergency, maternity, surgical and outpatient services for the coastal plain and surrounding area. Its presence makes the eastern side of the city busier with traffic than it might otherwise be. Kingsham Road and the streets around it connect Parklands to the city centre, a walk of about fifteen minutes. The area is served by bus routes running along Oving Road and St Pancras, linking to the city centre and the railway station. Parklands lacks the architectural distinction of the Pallants or the leafy character of Summersdale, but it provides affordable, functional housing in a convenient location. The eastern boundary is marked by the transition to agricultural land, and the flat open fields beyond provide long views towards the South Downs escarpment to the north. The area has a strong community identity, supported by the school, local churches, and residents' associations.
