Stockbridge

Suburban residential area south of the city centre, bounded by the canal basin to the north and the A27 to the south, with easy access to the canal towpath and harbour countryside.

Stockbridge is a residential area to the south of Chichester, broadly covering the land between the canal basin and the A27 Chichester bypass. The name is shared with the historic Stockbridge hundred, one of the medieval administrative divisions of the Chichester area. Today the area is primarily residential, with a mix of housing types from different periods. The streets around Stockbridge Road include inter-war semis and bungalows, post-war council housing, and more recent private development. The area has a practical, suburban character that contrasts with the historic core of the city a short walk to the north. The Chichester Canal basin sits at the northern edge of Stockbridge, where the canal begins its four-mile route south to Chichester Harbour at Birdham. The basin, restored by the Chichester Ship Canal Trust, is a local amenity with a small cafe and the starting point for canal boat trips. The towpath runs the full length of the canal and is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. To the south, the A27 bypass creates a firm boundary, with open countryside beyond leading towards Hunston and the harbour villages. Stockbridge has limited commercial provision. There are a few small shops and takeaways along the main roads, but residents generally travel into the city centre or to the retail parks for significant shopping. Parklands Infant and Junior Schools serve the area, and St Richard's Hospital is accessible to the east. The Whyke and Stockbridge areas merge without a hard boundary, and residents often think of the two as a single neighbourhood. The area is well placed for access to the canal, the harbour, and the countryside to the south, while remaining within easy reach of the city centre on foot or by bicycle.
