East Walls

Historic Site, Chichester

The East Walls are the best-preserved section of Chichester's Roman and medieval city walls, running along the eastern side of the walled city between the Northgate and Southgate areas. The walls were originally built by the Romans in the late second century and rebuilt and heightened in the medieval period. A public footpath runs along the top of the walls, providing an elevated walk with views over the city rooftops to the cathedral spire. The walk is one of the most popular short routes in Chichester and gives a clear sense of the city's compact, walled layout. The walls are a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Sections on the north and west sides also survive, though the eastern stretch is the most complete and walkable.
