Basin Road
Street guide, Chichester
Basin Road takes its name from the Chichester Canal basin, which it runs alongside. The road has a mixed-use character, with residential properties, small business units, and some light industrial premises. The canal basin itself has been partly restored and is the starting point for narrowboat trips along the surviving section of the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal. A canal trust building and car park occupy part of the basin area. Basin Road provides access to the southern side of the city and connects Stockbridge Road to the surrounding residential streets. The area around the basin has a slightly different feel from the rest of Chichester, with a more workaday character reflecting its historical function as a commercial waterway terminus. Some newer residential development has taken place on former industrial plots along the road. The canal towpath, which runs south from the basin towards Hunston, is a popular walking and cycling route.
