East Street

Street guide, Chichester

East Street runs from the Market Cross eastward through the city centre, carrying traffic and pedestrians towards the Hornet and beyond to the Portfield area. The street has a mixed retail and commercial character, with shops, restaurants, and professional offices occupying a range of building types from Georgian townhouses to twentieth-century infill. Chichester Gate Leisure Park, which includes a cinema and chain restaurants, is accessed from the southern side of East Street. The street is narrower than North Street and feels more enclosed, with continuous building frontages on both sides. Several of the buildings on the northern side have medieval origins beneath later facades. The eastern end connects seamlessly into the Hornet, and the transition between the two is essentially continuous. Bus routes pass along East Street, providing a link between the city centre and the eastern suburbs. The Butter Market, a small Victorian covered market, opens off the northern side.
