St Pancras
Street guide, Chichester
St Pancras is the southern continuation of South Street beyond the Southgate roundabout, running towards the canal basin and Fishbourne. The street takes its name from a former church that once stood in this area. It has a mixed character, with residential properties, small businesses, and some light industrial premises. The street has become more residential in recent decades, with several housing developments built on former commercial plots. St Pancras provides one of the principal routes out of the city to the south and west, and traffic can be heavy at peak times. The street sits outside the Roman walls and historically formed part of a suburb that grew up around the southern gate. The canal towpath is accessible from the southern end, providing a walking and cycling route towards Hunston and beyond. Some of the older buildings near the Southgate end have period character, though much of the street is twentieth-century in date.
