South Street
Street guide, Chichester
South Street runs from the Market Cross southward to the Southgate roundabout, passing through one of the oldest parts of Chichester. The street has a more varied character than North Street, with a mix of independent shops, restaurants, pubs, and estate agents. The Crown and Anchor and the Nag's Head are among several pubs that draw evening trade. Towards the Southgate end, the street narrows slightly and the buildings become older, with several listed properties dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The cathedral is a short walk to the west, and the Pallants quarter is accessible from the eastern side. South Street carries traffic in both directions, though volumes are modest within the city walls. The street connects to St Pancras beyond Southgate, which continues the route towards Fishbourne and the canal. The mix of uses gives South Street a livelier feel than many of the quieter lanes nearby.
