West Street
Street guide, Chichester
West Street runs from the Market Cross westward to the Westgate roundabout, passing the cathedral on its southern side. This is the most architecturally distinguished of the four principal streets, with the cathedral's bell tower and spire providing a dramatic backdrop at the western end. The Dolphin and Anchor, a Grade II listed pub and former coaching inn, is a prominent landmark on the street. Several Georgian and earlier buildings survive along the frontage, and the overall character is more restrained than the busier North Street. Shops, cafes, and restaurants occupy the ground floors, with offices and residential accommodation above. The street also provides access to the cathedral precinct and Bishop's Palace Gardens on the south side. At the western end, West Street meets the line of the Roman walls and passes through the site of the former Westgate. Traffic runs in both directions but is managed by the inner ring road junctions at either end.
