Broyle Road

Street guide, Chichester

Broyle Road heads northeast from the city centre towards the Chichester bypass and the A27. The name derives from a medieval deer park or 'broil' that once occupied the area north of the city. The road has a mixed character, with residential properties closer to the city giving way to larger houses and institutional buildings further out. Chichester High School occupies a prominent site along the road, and there are several care homes and a church. The residential properties near the city end include attractive Victorian and Edwardian houses, while further out the housing is more varied. Broyle Road carries significant traffic volumes as one of the main approaches to the city from the north. The road connects to Lavant Road via residential side streets and to the Summersdale area. At its northeastern end, it meets the A27 bypass junction, which provides access to the trunk road network running east towards Arundel and west towards Havant.
