Cathedral Way

Street guide, Chichester

Cathedral Way is a short road near Chichester Cathedral, providing access to the cathedral close and the surrounding ecclesiastical buildings. The road runs along the southern side of the cathedral precinct, connecting West Street to the inner ring road. It is relatively quiet, given its proximity to one of the city's most important buildings. The cathedral close includes the Bishop's Palace, the Deanery, and several canon's houses, many of which date from the medieval period. Cathedral Way offers some of the best views of the cathedral's south side, including the detached bell tower, the only medieval detached cathedral bell tower in England. The road also provides access to Bishop's Palace Gardens, which are open to the public. Traffic along Cathedral Way is light, and the atmosphere is considerably calmer than the shopping streets just to the north. Parking is restricted to permit holders in this area. Visitors to the cathedral and gardens frequently walk along the road, particularly during the summer months when the gardens are at their best.
