Lavant Road

Street guide, Chichester

Lavant Road is the main northern route out of Chichester, heading towards the village of Mid Lavant and the South Downs beyond. The road climbs gently as it leaves the city, passing through the Summersdale residential area, one of Chichester's most sought-after suburbs. Properties along Lavant Road are predominantly detached houses from the inter-war and post-war periods, many set back from the road with generous gardens. The road passes the Goodwood turning and provides access to the Goodwood estate, racecourse, and motor circuit. Traffic can be extremely heavy on Goodwood event days, particularly during the Festival of Speed in July and the Revival in September. The road runs parallel to the River Lavant, which flows south through the city to the sea. Summersdale Pharmacy, a doctor's surgery, and a small parade of shops serve the local community. The northern section of Lavant Road offers views towards the Downs. The River Lavant is a winterbourne stream and can flood in wet years, affecting properties along this corridor.
