Little London

Street guide, Chichester

Little London is a historic lane running north from the eastern end of East Street, connecting to the northern part of the walled city. The name is shared with similar lanes in other English towns and may reflect a concentration of London-connected tradespeople or simply the lane's importance as a route. The lane is narrow and retains its medieval scale, with buildings close to the pavement on both sides. A mix of residential properties and small commercial premises line the lane. Little London has a quiet, tucked-away character that contrasts with the busier main streets just metres away. Some of the buildings are listed, and the lane contributes to the historic character of the city centre. It is used as a pedestrian shortcut between East Street and the streets to the north. The lane is too narrow for comfortable two-way traffic, and most drivers avoid it in favour of the ring road.
