Oving Road

Street guide, Chichester

Oving Road is the main eastern route out of Chichester, running from the Portfield area towards the village of Oving. The western end, closest to the city, has a commercial character with car dealerships, a retail park, and various business premises along the Portfield strip. Beyond the Portfield roundabout, the road becomes more residential, with post-war housing estates and some newer developments. The road takes significant traffic volumes, serving as the A259 link between Chichester and the villages to the east. Chichester's main supermarket cluster is located at the Portfield end, including a Tesco and other retail outlets. The road passes close to the site of the former Portfield cricket ground. Further east, the character becomes semi-rural as the road leaves the city limits and heads through open farmland towards Oving. Bus services run along Oving Road, connecting the eastern suburbs to the city centre. The road is one of the busiest approaches to the city and is often congested during the morning and evening peaks.
