Stockbridge Road
Street guide, Chichester
Stockbridge Road runs south from the Southgate area towards Stockbridge and the Manhood Peninsula beyond. The road is a mixed-use route, with residential properties, light commercial premises, and some retail along its length. It crosses the Chichester Canal near the basin, where the towpath provides a popular walking route. The Stockbridge area to the south has seen significant housing development over the years and is one of the city's larger suburban districts. The road carries traffic heading towards Selsey, the Witterings, and other coastal villages on the Manhood Peninsula, making it busy at weekends and during the summer holiday season. A bus service runs along the route. Near the canal crossing, the road passes close to the site of the old canal basin, which has been partly restored and is used for narrowboat trips. The overall character is suburban, functional, and heavily trafficked. Speed limits and pedestrian crossings manage the flow, but congestion at the Southgate end is common during peak hours.
