Tower Street
Street guide, Chichester
Tower Street runs through the Pallants area in the southeastern quadrant of the walled city, connecting South Street to the area around the cathedral. The street takes its name from the cathedral's detached bell tower, which stands nearby. Tower Street is home to the Novium Museum, Chichester's local history museum, which incorporates a Roman bathhouse discovered during the building's construction. The street has a historic character, with a mix of Georgian townhouses and earlier buildings. It forms part of the Pallants conservation area, one of the best-preserved historic quarters in the city. Traffic is light, and the street is principally residential and institutional in character. The proximity to the cathedral and the Pallant House Gallery makes Tower Street part of the cultural heart of Chichester. Pedestrians moving between the cathedral and the eastern streets frequently pass along Tower Street. Several of the buildings have been converted to professional offices, particularly solicitors and accountants, which suits the quiet, respectable character of the street.
