Via Ravenna

Street guide, Chichester

Via Ravenna is a section of Chichester's inner ring road, running along the eastern side of the city centre. It is named after Ravenna in Italy, another of Chichester's twin towns. The connection to Ravenna is appropriate, as both cities have Roman origins and significant early Christian heritage. The road was built as part of the same traffic management scheme as Avenue de Chartres, designed to keep through-traffic away from the historic streets within the walls. Via Ravenna passes close to the Pallants and the eastern edge of the walled city, connecting to Avenue de Chartres at the northeastern corner and continuing south towards the Southgate area. The road has limited frontage, with the city wall and its associated green spaces on one side and various buildings on the other. It is a functional road rather than a street with its own character, but it plays an important role in the city's traffic circulation. Pedestrians can walk along the city walls path nearby.
