Westgate

Street guide, Chichester

Westgate is the western approach to Chichester, running from the Fishbourne direction into the city through the site of the former Roman and medieval west gate. The road carries traffic from the A259 Fishbourne road into the city centre, meeting the inner ring road at the Westgate roundabout. The street is relatively short but passes through an area with considerable historical interest. Parts of the Roman city wall are visible nearby, and the road itself follows the ancient route into the settlement. Buildings along Westgate include a mix of residential and commercial properties, with some dating from the Georgian period. The street provides access to several residential roads to the north, including streets close to Priory Park. Traffic management at the roundabout keeps vehicles moving, but the junction can become congested at peak times. The Westgate Fields, an area of open green space to the south, are accessible from nearby and provide a pleasant walking route along the city walls.
